I have my own list of usual suspects but I was looking for shows that you guys feel contain a particularly nice Birdsong.

Thanks in advance!

Hard to beat this one and I love how they are captured so brilliantly on this AUD. The highs of billy's cymbals to the lows of Phils bass bouncing off you.

6-22-73 has a damn good one too.

re 12/6/80 .... something about the sound quality on that show - sounds like they are playing right in your living room. could be my favorite acoustic set of them all ...

I think that would be any show that has a Birdsong. Seriously have you ever heard a bad version of this song? The first few in 71 are okay but after that I have loved everyone i have heard. If you want one I would go with 3/29/90. The Eyes made it on to Without a Net but the addition of Branford on the Birdsong from this show is also very special.

Yup gotta agree with Elbow on this one, never heard one I didn't like. All different and all beautiful in my book just depends on your mood and how it strikes you at the time if you ask me.

Next on the list to listen to. I love 81 and this set-list looks enticing.
Dude well I'm listening to it now and the Birdsong is nice but the Minglewood right after is out of this world and I'm currently listening to the FUNKIEST China Cat I think I've ever heard.

Nice - I was there. Don't have any recollection of it but that don't matter. I guess I'll have to grab this one and give it a listen!!!

P.S. Looks like the AUD version of this is pretty highly rated also:

re 3/9/81 .. that entire 1st set is unreal. a freaky Stranger, stunning Althea, rare and very good Deep Elem, the Bird you mention, and a blazing Minglewood to end it.

wasn't all that crazy about the 2nd set though, despite the outstanding set list.

Great Birdsong on this one. With Hornsby in the mix, you get the '70's feel to it, but with the '90's midi effects. Really, one of the finer later day Birdsong's.

Enjoy

i definitely fall into elbow's camp when it comes to Bird Song, but here are two versions that i have been truly enjoying of late:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-02-26.glassberg.steinthal-cohen-vernon.20342.sbeok.shnf

http://www.archive.org/details/gd81-05-09.glassberg.17699.sbeok.shnf

and here's a version i'm giving listen to as i write this, however, i haven't fully digested it yet

Arb, I'm reading your post and sure enough that exact Birdsong is playing right now. I guess you also downloaded that new Coyote source for this show. It's a nice version, however I'm partial to the above mentioned 3-7-81. Hard to top that one.

true, i did grab the Coyotte source, the sound is phenomenal, but the Bird Song, while good, was not remarkable; yes, the 3/7 is very good, but then again, i don't find much in that year to be dismissive of; cheers

9/21/72 is my favorite (DP36) - classic fall 72 jamming. also like the fascinating version from Without A Net (12/9/89)

that's a great, great show. i just listened to that disc 3 darkstar>dew last week and was floored. a fitting end to the series i say, why it took so long to release that one is beyond me, though.

If you want a Bird Song that really goes way out get the 17 1/2 minute version from 3/7/81. At times it seems like they're playing a Dark Star within a Bird Song, it's amazing.

The rest of this show is just as good, though, especially the jam after Saint of Circumstance and the Truckin'>Black Peter jam.

I've been partial to this acoustic version. I saw a version from this show on You Tube recently and found myself welling up a bit. I'll have to check out the one from December...
